The deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Le Defi Fontenil opens with cedar and spice box notions giving way to cassis, baked plums and black cherries with touches of fallen leaves, dusty soil and chargrill. Full-bodied, firm and taut in the mouth with plenty of exuberant black fruits and earthy layers, it finishes on a lingering earthy note. Give it another 2-3 years in bottle and drink it over the next 20+.
The 2015 Le Défi de Fontenil, 100% Merlot from the estate's 60-100 year old vines and fermented in barrel, is magnificent. Rich, powerful and unctuous, the 2015 possesses stunning depth an explosive energy to burn. Inky fruit, chocolate, exotic spice and lavender are some of the many notes that burst out of the glass in this vivid, full-throttled Fronsac. The 2015 is flat-out gorgeous.
Dark in color, with layers of rich dark fruit, licorice, crushed rock, wet earth and espresso. There is freshness, length, purity of fruit and complexity in the long, round, finish. This can age and evolve for 15-20 year with out any trouble.

I think the finest Fronsac produced in the vintage is the 2015 Le Defi de Fontenil and it’s an incredible wine you need to seek out. Made from 100% Merlot and loaded with notions of blackcurrants, smoked earth, and chocolate, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a broad, expansive texture, sweet tannin, and a great finish. The 2000 is drinking beautifully today, and the 2015 will be no different and keep for upwards of two decades.
