Château Le Bon Pasteur 2019 Pomerol France
2019 : A RADIANT VINTAGE.
The wine is a dense purple colour with deep purple glints. Lovely freshness and complexity on the nose with notes of black fruit and liquorice coming through. On the palate, the wine’s pleasant, creamy character merges into a silky texture. The finish is long and lingering and reveals a superb, refined tannic structure.
Although every vintage is unique, and after the magnificent 2018, it seemed beyond our wildest dreams that we would have such a superb and amazingly smooth year. Nature is sometimes fickle, but on occasions wonderfully generous. The record mild temperatures at the end of winter enticed the vines out of their dormancy early. Encouraged by the continuing warm conditions, the first leaves grew quickly, and the vines were already widely in leaf by the beginning of April! The mid-point of the flowering process was reached in the first week of June. From the end of June, the weather pattern changed dramatically, and the sun worked its magic. Drenched in glorious sunshine, the vines got quickly back into their stride. In July, there were no fewer than 22 days when the temperature highs were above 30°C.! Our Merlot and Cabernet Franc responded well to these dry conditions, thanks to Château Le Bon Pasteur’s clay subsoil and the vines’ deep roots. From mid-August, the ripening process enjoyed optimal weather conditions. The wide swings in diurnal temperatures (15°C difference between day and night), and glorious sunshine with intervals of light rainfall every ten days, accelerated polyphenol synthesis. The harvest took place in ideal conditions from September 20th to October 7th. 2019 was a radiant vintage that mirrored the incredible summer, which forged its identity and showed the uniqueness of our fabulous Pomerol terroir.
An integral part of the history of the Rolland family, Châteaux Le Bon Pasteur, Rolland Maillet and Bertineau St-Vincent will remain dear to Dany & Michel Rolland. They will manage these family estates from 1978 to 2012. Even after their sale to the Goldin Group in 2013, they remain in charge of the production of the wines, and their ambassadors. A land on which Michel was born and which he knows better than anyone for having covered every acre of it since his early childhood, with his father and grandfather.
